BAFTA Loves the Sound Work in The Artist… Wait a Minute

"Did you hear that, Uggie?"

Yes, BAFTA threw the silent film a nod in the Sound category, only furthering the notion that it’s the movie to beat at this year’s Academy Awards. The Artist takes the lead with the British Academy by landing twelve nominations, including Film, Director, Original Screenplay, and both Lead Acting races (Bérénice Bejo got bumped up to Lead despite campaigning for a Supporting Actress nomination).

Next in line is Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which picked up eleven nominations; Gary Oldman’s Lead Actor mention isn’t surprising for the Brits, but one wonders if Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Sherak might repeat this exact same lineup next Tuesday morning.

Now let me weep for my beloved Jane Eyre. I knew it wouldn’t get too much awards attention since it boasted a condemningly early release date, but I had small hope that Mia Wasikowska’s powerful performance could break through to a nomination. Alas, the film only gets a Costume Design nomination, although it’s certainly well deserved.

Check out the nominations below and proceed to rejoice or weep (take your pick); winner guesses predictions denoted by surrounding asterisks (***contender***)
